A man accused of shooting and killing a Panola County Sheriff's Deputy has been arrested following a high speed chase through Shreveport.

According to the Panola County Sheriff's Office, the fatal shooting happened just after 2 a.m. this morning off FM 10 outside of Carthage. Gregory Newsom, the man believed to be responsible for the shooting, allegedly shot the officer 6 times with a semi-automatic rifle during a routine traffic stop.

Following the shooting, Newsom allegedly lead Shreveport Police, Caddo Parish Deputy's and Louisiana State Police on a high speed chase for close to an hour. Eventually, the suspect wrecked on 3132 near the 70th Street exit and was apprehended just off of Buncombe Road.

The Texas Rangers are continuing their investigation into the shooting. The Panola County Sheriff's Office says more details about the shooting will be made available later today. A warrant has been issued for the capital murder of a peace officer.
