Future of Mardi Gras Parades in Shreveport – Take Our Poll
Big discussions are planned this week about the future of the 2 biggest Mardi Gras parades in Shreveport.
Mayor Adrian Perkins is trying to reach a new agreement with the Krewes of Centaur and Gemini about the plan for the 2022 parades.
Another meeting with the city and Krewe leaders is planned for tomorrow (Tuesday). We should know more about the plan after that meeting.
Mayor Perkins recently posted this message on social media:
Mardi Gras is an annual tradition that the City of Shreveport will continue to support. Right now, we are negotiating future plans, but please know that I’m committed to working with all of the parties involved to ensure a successful 2022 Mardi Gras season.
There have been discussions about the high cost of security for the parades and the numbers of police officers and firefighters that are required to work the two events. A lot of talks have been happening about the route. Some want to keep the parades confined to the Clyde Fant Parkway and cut out the portion of the parade that runs through Shreve City and down East Kings Highway.
This has been an ongoing debate. KEEL News has done 2 polls on this topic over the past five years and the answers vary widely. Here are the questions and the responses we got.
In 2018, we asked:
What Route Should Shreveport's Mardi Gras Take?
Keep in on the Clyde Fant Parkway only. 51.68%
Leave it the way it is. 34.46%
Return to a partial route in Bossier City. 9.20%
I don't care. 4.66%
In 2016, we asked:
Should Changes Be Made to the Mardi Gras Parades?
Yes, bring the parade back to Bossier City 28.47%
Yes, use the parkway only 22.63%
No 22.63%
Yes, start earlier in the day 19.71%
Yes, leave Broadmoor out of the route 4.38%
I'm undecided or I don't care 2.19%
We know Bossier City is out for this year. But that could change in the future.
It’s time to take the temperature of our community again this year. What’s your opinion?
The Krewe of Centaur Parade is set to roll on February 19 with Gemini set for the following Saturday on February 26.
