It's the question every red blooded Louisiana citizen has been asking themselves throughout the coronavirus pandemic, "What about Mardi Gras?" Because if we're being honest, we are already starting to wonder what is going to be cancelled in 2021.

Mardi Gras is not only a centuries old tradition in our state, but one that brings an economic impact that cannot be understated. Whether you like the glitz and glamour of the balls, or the revelry of the parades, or maybe just the uniqueness of the rural "Chicken Runs", it's an important part of our culture and history. Mardi Gras IS Louisiana.

So, it's not a big surprise that in New Orleans, they are already laser focused on what is going to happen to Mardi Gras season with the current health crisis still raging on. Orleans Parish alone has more than 30 parades during carnival season, and that includes Fat Tuesday, which will be February 16th next year.  According to WDSU TV There are several committees that are currently assessing the situation, including the Mayor's Mardi Gras Advisory Council, which has come up with a sub committee just to deal with COVID safety guidelines. The final say so on the festivities will come from the City of New Orleans.

Jefferson Parish already released a tentative schedule of parades for carnival season, but they are also in a "wait and see" mode when it comes to decisions about the festivities. James Reiss, a spokesperson with the Krewe of Rex, told WDSU "In talking to all of the Krewe Captains, everybody's got good intentions. Everybody wants Mardi Gras to happen. But we understand we will not know until the fall and winter months bring us more data regarding the pandemic."

In Acadiana, several Krewes have already canceled activities for next year, including the Mystic Krewe of Apollo de Lafayette, the Royal Order of Unicorn, the Royal Order of Eden in New Iberia,  the Krewe of Triton and the Krewe de Wideload.

Check out the video from WDSU below, and let's keep out chins up, and hope everything works out for the best outcome, y'all.
