In 2009, a legendary diner shut its doors forever, leaving an indelible memory of chicken-fried steaks, late-night grilled cheese sandwiches, and gallons of chicory infused coffee.

Murrell's Restaurant was a 24/7 fixture in Shreveport for more than 60 years. It is said that more city politics were discussed at those wobbly tables than in city chambers.

When I was in high school at Caddo Magnet, I stopped there every morning for biscuits and gravy. During my college years, Murrell's was my study hall. In my early adulthood, Murrell's was the place I went to to soak up a belly full of liquor with their magical club sandwich and copious amounts of crackers and Green Goddess dressing.

And we can't possibly forget Ms. Mary, because she never forgot any of us.

But now, that building is long since gone; replaced with, what my friends and I call, The Whata-Murrell's. I still think of that old, smoke-filled, diner with fondness, and I still haven't been able to get a Western Omelet like they made them...until now:

You'll never guess what I found on Food Network's website! Murrell's was featured on a show called "Best Of" on the episode '24/7 Spots' and the network still has Murrell's recipe for the treasured Western Omelet. CLICK HERE for the recipe!

Just remember, you need some strong coffee and a full ashtray beside you to really appreciate it.
