Although Rocket Raccoon’s origins have been discussed and hinted at in both Guardians of the Galaxy movies, we still don’t know too much about his past — and given what we do know, that seems okay. It’s not as if fans need a Marvel movie with an entire sequence devoted to the torturous circumstances that led to Rocket’s creation. This isn’t the DCEU, after all. But according to James Gunn, that’s about to change.

During an appearance at HASCON, Hasbro’s first toy convention, Gunn addressed the idea of exploring Rocket’s somewhat mysterious backstory (via MCU Exchange):

We are going to learn more about where Rocket comes from in the coming sagas. It’s going to be a little different from the comics. We already know a lot about from where he came from. It’s a little bit more horrible than what it is in the comics when you come down to it. We will learn more about that.

Rocket Raccoon’s arc was one of the most interesting components in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which further developed and enriched the prickly, foul-mouthed character voiced by Bradley Cooper. It’s still unlikely that we’ll see Rocket’s “horrible” origins depicted in full (and thank goodness), but Vol. 2 opened him up in compelling ways and certainly set the stage to learn more about his past in the future.

Gunn is returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which could arrive in 2020. Until then, you can look forward to seeing your favorite bunch of a-holes next summer in Avengers: Infinity War.
