Mark Ruffalo Teases Hulk Trilogy That Begins With ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
Due to some complicated rights issues, it remains unlikely that we’ll see everyone’s favorite angry green smashing machine in another solo movie anytime soon. But Mark Ruffalo and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige have apparently cooked up a plan that will allow the Hulk (and his puny alter ego Bruce Banner) to have his very own film trilogy of sorts. Think of it as a film-within-a-film trilogy.
Ruffalo’s work as Banner / Hulk has been really incredible to watch, even though sharing the runtime with multiple Avengers hasn’t exactly allowed for a full exploration of his character. But it seems as though Ruffalo and Feige have found a clever workaround that utilizes what screen time he does have to create a trilogy story for Hulk that will begin with Thor: Ragnarok.
Speaking with CinemaBlend, Ruffalo explains:
So basically, Kevin [Feige] pulled me aside before this, and said, ‘If you were gonna do a... if we were going to do a standalone Hulk movie, what would it be?’ And I said, ‘I think it should be this, this, this, and this and this, and ends up like this.’ And he’s like, ‘I love that. Why don’t we do that in the next three movies, starting with Thor 3 and then we go into Avengers 3 and 4.’ And I was like, ‘That sounds great!’ And so we are at the beginning of this arc.
That arc begins on the battle planet of Sakaar, where Hulk reunites with his old work-friend Thor when the two are pitted against each other in a gladiator-style fight to the death. Spoiler: They don’t kill each other. Instead, Hulk teams up with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor for his latest adventure, which sees him confronting Hela (Cate Blanchett), the goddess of death, and forming a superhero squad of his own featuring Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson).
Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3.
