I am so sad to learn today that one of Shreveport's shining stars has died. Zavion Davenport, better known as Chi Chi DeVayne has died after being hospitalized for scleroderma. She ultimately died after getting pneumonia.

Scleroderma is a chronic condition that is classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Hardening of the skin is one of the most visible manifestations of the disease. Chi Chi appeared on RuPaul's Drag race in season 8 and during an All Star Season. The show has confirmed the death and tributes are pouring in from around the world.

I considered Chi Chi a friend, but I think that's how thousands of people in our area felt after meeting her. She was one of the performers at Central Station's massive Drag Show and always got the crowd cheering.

This is what has been posted by the club about Chi Chi:

What seems like hours to compose a few thoughts about someone so special actually takes a lifetime to do and then you’re never really finished. Chi Chi was our family. We are deeply saddened that one of our own has been taken from us. She was a beacon of light and hope in a world of uncertainty with a smile that would take you for miles. We now carry that wonderful beacon with us forever. Chi Chi DeVayne, fly with the stars, angel.

Davenport was born in Shreveport and attended Fair Park High School. What always struck me about her was how friendly she was both before and after appearing on RuPaul's Drag Race. Chi Chi was kind to all of the fans who approached her and was more than willing to take a photo. I will always treasure my moment with Chi Chi.

After being on Drag Race in 2016 and again in 2018, Chi Chi DeVayne was signed to do appearances across the country from Vegas to Miami. Once COVID-19 hit, things came to a screeching halt.

Here is an appearance from earlier this year when Chi Chi is talking about being quarantined.

Davenport was 34. Funeral arrangements are pending.
