While there’s some debate over its provenance, marijuana scholars mostly agree that the slang term “420” originated in Southern California during the early 1970s, when a group of high school-aged pals would convene at the same time of 4:20PM every day to light up. The term has since assumed a broader significance, referring in a more general sense to the act and practice of smoking pot — perhaps you’ve noticed Craigslist apartment ads claiming to be “420 friendly,” or maybe you’ve attended any music festival in America in the last 40 years. It’s a whole big thing.

So when the news broke today at Indiewire that the sequel to Super Troopers — a key entry in the canon of stoner cinema — would debut on April 20 in 2018, something smelled funny, and not like a skunk. Yes, the slacker Vermont State Policemen are giving their fanbase the subtle nod that this one will also pair well with a fine herbal accompaniment. That date is also held by the Dwayne Johnson-led Rampage and a remake of the Kurt Russell/Goldie Hawn comedy Overboard, both of which can now expect a slight box-office bump from intended Super Troopers 2 viewers who accidentally pressed the wrong button on the ticketing kiosk’s touch-screen and only realized their mistake too late.

But wait, there’s more! Fox Searchlight scheduling Super Troopers 2 for Marijuana Appreciation Day (except for habitual marijuana users, in which case it is “Friday”) necessitated moving Wes Anderson’s upcoming stop-motion feature Isle of Dogs, which had been previously slated for that week. So we’ll all get an eyeful of Anderson’s latest a month ahead of time, now on March 23! Stoners, Wes Anderson superfans — in this news item, everybody wins!
