After taking on Preacher, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are dipping their toes in the superhero genre with another Garth Ennis adaptation. But don’t mistake their new Amazon series The Boys as another show about your average caped and latex-clad purveyors of justice. In this world, superheroes are actually pretty crappy.

In Ennis’ comic, most superheroes have turned corrupt and it’s up to a CIA black ops crew known as The Boys to bring them down. The first teaser trailer for the series debuted at New York Comic-Con over the weekend, offering the first look at the titular vigilantes. The footage begins with a commercial for Vought-American, the company responsible for the world’s most powerful superhero teams. Elisabeth Shue’s Madelyn Stillwell shows off a catalogue of superhero costumes that clearly poke fun at the DCEU. The Boys’ ain’t having it though, so they quickly flip off the TV. Like I said, not your average superhero show.

The NYCC panel, which included the cast and showrunner Eric Kripke, also brought some big news for the series. Most exciting, Simon Pegg joined the cast, and he’ll be playing none other than Hughie’s (Jack Quaid) dad – Hughie was modeled after Pegg in the graphic novel, so it only makes sense. The rest of the cast includes Karl Urban as Billy Butcher, Karen Fukuhara as The Female, who will be getting a full name and a backstory in the show, Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk and Tomer Capon as Frenchie. The Seven, the main superhero gang The Boys are after, will include Antony Starr as The Homelander, Jessica Jones‘ Erin Moriarty as Annie January aka Starlight, Chace Crawford as The Deep, and Jennifer Esposito as CIA Agent Susan Raynor,

The season will differ from the comics somewhat, opening before the graphic novel begins to bring The Boys and the Seven together over the first season, according to SyFy Wire. The site also teased that the rest of the footage and the full trailer shown at the panel was super bloody and violent. The Boys arrives on Amazon Prime next year.
