Remember the underwear bomber?  His name was Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. And back on Christmas of 2009, he flew from Amsterdam to Detroit, and tried to set off a bomb in his underwear. But he ended up just setting his pants on fire.

Well, some new details have emerged, and one big question has finally been answered: Why on earth did this a-hole target Detroit?

Turns out he wasn’t trying to do something symbolic to the American auto industry. And it wasn’t because he chose his target based on Census data from a century ago, when Detroit was one of America’s most thriving cities.

No.  He picked Detroit because it was the American destination with the CHEAPEST AIRFARE.

The report says he considered Houston and Chicago, but the rates were too high. Detroit was more moderately priced, so that became the target.

Abdulmutallab was arrested after the bombing. He’s been charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted murder of 289 people, and will spend the rest of his life in prison.
