Two Captain Shreve High School students, Gerritt Griffith and Maezion Henix, have signed on the bottom line, committing to play lacrosse for East Baptist Texas University.

The two graduating seniors, like most, had a wrench thrown into their plans this spring due to COVID-19. While the two won't walk the graduation stage until next month along with the rest of the class of 2020 in Caddo Parish, they now have cemented their higher education plans for the fall.

Before a tight knit group of friends and family, Griffith signed his intent to play alongside Captain Shreve Lacrosse Head Coach Faktor and ETBU Lacrosse Head Coach Alain Savage today. Henix signed last week. The ETBU Lacrosse team has now rounded out their rooster with 17 players.

Griffith's proud mother, Jennifer Scogins Griffith, says that he had offers to play at ETBU, Centenary College here in Shreveport, and Dallas Baptist University and was the captain of the Captain Shreve squad his senior year. Jennifer says, 'Gerritt played football for 7 years and in high school was not really given a chance because of his size. Gerritt had some friends who played lacrosse, so he decided to play in a summer lacrosse league prior to his junior year.' She added, 'He took to the sport really quick and became the starting face off specialist his first year at Captain Shreve.'

Not bad for a young athlete new to a sport! Speaking of the sport of lacrosse, it's growing in popularity with teams at Airline, Loyola, C.E. Byrd, Captain Shreve, Caddo Magnet, and Parkway and Bossier High Schools have banded together as the Bossier Renegades. Our area also boasts travel teams for middle to high school aged students coached by Centenary's CJ Seling. Griffith says 'The LSU Lacrosse Coach has partnered with the Centenary Coach to bring even more to our area with the FTK Lacrosse team that travels.' With that being said, I think we'll be hearing a lot more about the sport of lacrosse in our area in the future.
