With the State Fair of Louisiana going on now, a lot of people have 4-H on their mind and there's no better time to get your kids involved in the Bossier Parish 4-H Horse Club!

I grew up in 4-H and I credit it with teaching me many valuable life lessons that I've carried on into adulthood. I've also been a lifelong lover and owner of horses. It's been proven over and over again that youth that are involved with horses are more responsible, empathetic and develop a strong work ethic, confidence and social skills. On top of that, working with horses will get your kids moving, out from in front of a screen and it often translates into better grades at school!

Of course, 4-H offers all kinds of options, but I was mainly focused on the equine program growning up. You can click here to find out more about the 4-H program in Bossier Parish in general. I was so happy to run into my friend Jessica Normand over the weekend who was out with members of the Bossier Parish 4-H Horse Club as they spread the word about the club at the Holly Hill Horse Trials in Benton!

According to Jessica, the Bossier Parish 4-H Horse Club is for kids ages 9-18 that want to improve their riding and horsemanship skills. Some of the areas of education that they cover are horse health and nutrition, grooming, tack, training, horse dentistry and farrier needs. Members participate in barrell races, poles and flags and sorting and roping events, just to name a few. The club is open to both English and Western disciplines of riding and even has a drill team with a king and queen! Friendships are made, while having fun and developing leadership skills!

Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month at the Rocking H Faith Ranch in Elm Grove. The first meeting is instructional and the second is mounted. Horse owndership is not required, however, it is preferred.

If you are interested in sponsoring the club or becoming a member, you can reach out to Jessica at (318) 517-2868. Sponsorships and donations are used to cover the costs for the children involved to provide the tools they need to learn and to defray the costs of competitions, prizes and awards. The winners of the local events are eligible for state and national 4-H competiions and this helps to send our local members to these events as well.

If you want to meet some of the members in person or just check it out, the club is hosting a Halloween event! It's open to the public and they'd love to see you there!
