Deep Gras Hits Shreveport With Busy Mardi Gras Weekend
While there continues to be an online debate over the term "Deep Gras", it's getting to the point where you can't argue against the concept. If you're not familiar with "Deep Gras", its a term that was coined by Louisiana singer/songwriter Dominique Lejeune in 2020. The premise is pretty simple, here's how she first explained it:
"We are now entering Deep Gras. The period of time between noon Wednesday and midnight Ash Wednesday. You now accept that everything you do for the next week revolves around Mardi Gras. You are about to see everyone you’ve ever known, and meet strangers that you’ll soon know.
You will sleep too little. You will drink too much. You will eat and dance A LOT. It’s a time of community, celebration, and the good times really do roll. Everyday problems become put on pause. It’s without a doubt the happiest time of the year. Live it up, y’all!"
In most comment sections, Louisiana folks get it, and support this concept. However you will find a pocket of nay-sayers who think the term is stupid, and chastise the use. Which isn't very Mardi Gras of them at all.
But in Shreveport, the calendar for "Deep Gras" really starts to make sense with the term. Just take a quick glance at this weekend's Mardi Gras calendar in Shreveport...

If this doesn't represent the spirit of the "Deep Gras" concept, I really don't know what does. This is the thick of things, the home stretch, and it really feels like it deserves its own term. Which is why I'm here to tell you that Shreveport needs to embrace "Deep Gras" for this weekend on the calendar.
