As we dig out from under the collapsed roofs and carports and finally restore running water to NWLA, many of us are looking for a silver lining. Did the hard freeze help curb any of our local pests?

I've seen several people posit as to whether or not the freeze will kill the Salvinia on Lake Bistineu and other area bodies of water. After all, the cold has been known to kill or at least slow its growth in the past. We endured 10 days of intense cold. It was certainly a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence for our area. So, if there were even the slimmest chance for the cold weather to work, this is it. Unfortunately, we won't know the answer to that for a few months.

I saw another article today that asked whether or not the freezing temps could have rid Shreveport of the bat problem that's persisted for years at Fairgrounds Field. No one has had the chance to investigate yet. Clearly, there are other priorities, but I'll be interested to see what city officials find.

Following that logic, could we be seeing a solution to the barn swallow infestation on the Jimmy Davis Bridge that continues to prevent much-needed repairs? What about the unofficial State Bird of Louisiana, the mosquito? Will we see a reduction in their numbers? I'm afraid I have bad news there. I didn't have to speak to any experts on that subject because tonight, as I was out feeding my horses, I saw a lot! I was actually shocked to see so many because after all, it's still February.

Have you noted any silver linings with regard to 'Snovid 2021?' Shoot me a message, I'd love to hear your comments!
