Judge Rules Anseman Not Eligible For Third Circuit Candidacy

A judge candidate for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals--Vanessa Anseman--heard from a Louisiana judge that she will not be eligible to run for that post.

Following a Monday afternoon hearing, State District Judge Alonzo Harris has ruled Anseman is ineligible to run for the post based on what our news partners at KATC called a three-pronged test.

Harris based his decision on whether Anseman could practice law; could she collect fees; and could she appear in court.

With negative answers to each of the queries, Harris ruled that the candidate did not have the required 10 years under her belt to run as an appeals judge. More specifically, Harris tallied that she was 50 days short of the required 10 year-time frame to be eligible for the March 25th primary election.

The hearing was called last week when St. Landry Parish District Attorney Earl Taylor filed a challenge of Anseman's candidacy.

Anseman, who said she plans to appeal the ruling, is set to debate fellow candidate Susan Theall Tuesday afternoon on the UL Lafayette campus.
