Louisiana Lawmakers Write Rules For Self-Driving Vehicles

While we're probably a few years away from self-driving vehicles becoming the norm here in Louisiana, our lawmakers have already started to hash out the laws relating to them.

Most importantly, self-driving trucks that would be hauling through multiple states. Louisiana's laws, which have already been signed by Gov. Edwards, go into effect August 1st.

The legislature received near unanimous support from Louisiana's lawmakers, who are getting ready for self-driving vehicles, and want to lure companies that are producing self-driving trucks.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says 29 states have enacted laws involving autonomous vehicles.

Louisiana’s law will allow self-driving vehicles to transport passengers or property if they are deemed able to follow state vehicle and traffic laws, as well as meet federal vehicle safety standards. The vehicles must have a minimum of $2 million in insurance coverage.
