The mighty Mississippi River is swelling up again down in the southern part of our state causing Army Corps of Engineers to begin checking all the levees twice a week. Ricky Boyett, spokesman for the Corps, says that all this is pretty normal for Louisiana in the spring and this week's heavy rains should not necessarily result in an even bigger rise in the swollen waters. "This is kind of that time of year where we do normally see a spring rise in the river during what we call high water season.", said Boyett. He also went on to add that should it become necessary the Corps is prepared to reopen the Bonnet Claire Spillway as it did back in January for three weeks time.
