Next Sunday, June 2nd, the gates of the Morganza Spillway will be opened. It's the third time in that structure's history that the gates have been opened to alleviate flooding on the Mississippi River, Red River, and Atchafalaya River systems.

How the opening of those flood gates will affect those down river is the subject of two special meetings planned by the Army Corps of Engineers this week.

The first meeting is scheduled for tonight at 6 pm. It will be held in the  Butte LaRose fire station. The second meeting, set for tomorrow at 10 am will be held a the multipurpose building on campus at Morgan City High School.

Residents with questions and concerns are encouraged to attend either of these meetings. Approval to open the gates of the spillway was granted yesterday. The plan right now should river forecasts hold true, is to open at least some of the gates of the flood control structure on Sunday, June, 2nd.
