Federal disaster areas have been declared for Tangipahoa, St. Helena, East Baton Rouge and Livingston parishes. Residents in these areas will be able to register damage and begin the process to get help. Residents are encouraged to take photos of all of the damage and keep all receipts.

The White House released this statement:

This evening, the President spoke with Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards to let him know that his request for an emergency declaration has been granted for the state's flood response and recovery efforts. The President told Governor Edwards that his prayers are with the people of Louisiana, and that his Administration will continue to support the state's ongoing recovery. The President received an update on the flooding earlier in the day from his Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco, who will keep him updated.

More than 10,000 people are in shelters and more than 20,000 people have been rescued across the region.

Baton Rouge river center, a major events location is now open as a primary shelter.

Edwards said president Barack Obama called him and said that “the people of south Louisiana are in his thoughts and prayers and the federal government will be a solid partner.

All motorists stranded on I-12 east of Baton Rouge have been rescued, but many of their cars are still out on the freeway. Major Doug Cain, spokesman of the Louisiana state police, said about 125 vehicles became stranded on the seven-mile stretch of the interstate.
