This is awesome! You can actually find out all kinds of nifty secrets about where we live and how our city was back in 1940.  The National Archives have released the 1940 Census info. What is interesting, this was during the Great Depression. So what was Shreveport, LA like in 1940?

I have been combing through all the info I can, so far. There is a ton of information from 72 years ago.

What is crazy is that you can search for a person, streets, maps and even pictures from that year.  Everyone's excitement over this site has already crashed the server once, which means that your mileage may vary on how much info you can get today.  But this is worth combing through.

What kinds of things can you find?

So far, I have found both of my Grandfathers and my Grandmother on my Dad's side.  As long as you know someone's first and last name and if you know what state they lived in, you are well on your way.  What is interesting, my grandfather is still alive and kicking in his mid-90s, as is my Grandmother.  Unfortunately, my grandparents on my father's side have passed on, but I can at least get a peek of what my Grandparents were doing in 1940.

Even though, we may see a glimpse into their lives from that time (a time that isn't that dissimilar from now) that seems so foreign to us. No computers, no mass communication. Not everyone had a TV, some people didn't have phones, wireless technology was only something the government had and comic books talked about.

I already had a lot of questions that will go unanswered. Now there are so many more that I have for them.
