Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Suicide Squad’ Breaks August Records

Despite receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews, Suicide Squad opened with record-smashing numbers, obliterating the record set by Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014. And yet, the box office of summer 2016 has taught us one thing: anything can happen after that opening weekend and it probably will. This certainly looks like a huge victory for Warner Bros. and their DC Extended Universe right now, but who knows what next week will bring?

Daisy Ridley to Star in YA Thriller ‘Chaos Walking’ For ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Director

Now here’s a pairing we can totally get behind: Star Wars hero Daisy Ridley and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. This news would only be better if they were making an Edge of Tomorrow sequel instead of a post-apocalyptic YA thriller, but sci-fi is still sci-fi, and more Daisy Ridley cannot possibly be a bad thing.

Ditto for people of color. That makes today’s news particularly heartening, as Ava DuVernay is set to become the first woman of color to helm a $100 million dollar film — a precedent that could (and should) pave the way for studios to hand more big budget blockbusters over to women.
