One of the 15 films on ScreenCrush’s summer movie preview isn’t a comic book movie or an existing franchise, but a comedy that will break some major Hollywood ground – Crazy Rich Asians. The big screen adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s best seller features a primarily all-Asian cast in a story aimed at dismantling stereotypes. It also looks fun, and funny, as heck.

We’ve only seen a few photos from the upcoming film from Now You See Me 2 director Jon M. Chu so far, but today brings the first teaser. We meet Constance Wu’s (Fresh Off the Boat) Rachel, an American-born Chinese woman who’s invited on a trip to Singapore by her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) for a friend’s wedding. But as it turns out, Nick’s family is loaded, like dripping in old money, “the Prince Williams of Asia” loaded. The teaser gives us just a taste of all the opulence of Nick’s world, from cars on cars on cars to firework extravaganzas and decadent balls.

Here's the official synopsis:

The story follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life.

It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.

The cast also includes Awkwafina, who we’ll also see this summer in Ocean’s 8, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chang, Ken Jeong, and Sonoya Mizuno. Stay tuned for the first full trailer, arriving Monday. Crazy Rich Asians hits theaters August 17.
