‘Disney on Ice': Fun for the Family, Hard on the Bank Account

Disney on Ice 1“Disney on Ice: Rockin’ Ever After” was an incredibly fun and entertaining show, but why does everything have to cost so much?

I took my 5-year-old daughter to the 2 p.m. Saturday show at CenturyLink Center, and my sister, brother-in-law and their nearly-8-month old daughter came along with us. Sis and I and my girl were singing along to tunes from the Disney movies we enjoy most — “The Little Mermaid,” “Brave,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Tangled.” The ice skaters were great, the show was visually amazing. But the souvenirs…ouch!

Before we even went in the doors, I had sis grab me a program. That was $15, plus the $5 coloring book. So I spent a 20-spot right off the bat.

Nearly everything we got once we made it inside had some sort of souvenir attached to it, which jacked the price up about $10 more. My daughter chose a beautiful pearly pony as her prize. That was $18. I also got her a snow cone, which came in your choice of princess cup…$12, plus the cost of the spoon-straw, which was another few bucks. And the cotton candy, with its attached golden crown with Mickey Mouse ears, ran us at least $10.

I got hungry before the show started, so I had my brother-in-law grab me some nachos, popcorn and a drink. I handed him a $20 bill. No change back, and my sis actually split the cost of the popcorn — in its vinyl Mickey Mouse souvenir bag — with me.

I considered getting my daughter a t-shirt, then decided I’d spent quite enough. Thank goodness I didn’t have to pay for our tickets! I even picked us some pretty good seats and took a ton of pictures.

Advice to anyone thinking about going to this show…either don’t buy anything at all — or be prepared to pay — because the Disney brand isn’t cheap.

Is the cost worth it? Take a look at these photos and decide for yourself!
