Who spends more on Valentine's Day: men or women?

Somedays I'm not the brightest bulb in the lamp. I told Robert I think women probably spend more on Valentine's Day gifts than men. He says that's the stupidest thing I've ever told him.
And maybe he's right. But I think women have to buy all the other stuff around Valentine's Day like treats and cards for the kids. So I started to do a little research and found out Robert is right (dang it)! The National Retail Federation did a survey and found that the average person expects to spend a total of $133.91 on Valentine’s-related items this year. That’s about $3 more than last year’s average. And to prove my theory wrong, that number includes money spent not only on a significant other, but also children, friends, teachers, colleagues and pets. The average man plans to spend $108.38 on his significant other, while the average woman plans to spend $49.41 on hers. Spending for Valentine’s Day will reach $3.9 billion.
