The Shreveport Journalism Foundation is seeking applicants for the two $1,000 scholarships it gives in memory of veteran journalists Orland Dodson and Kerry Garland.

The scholarships are available to college juniors and seniors who are majoring in journalism or public relations and who reside or attend a four-year college in the 10 Northwest Louisiana parishes of Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, DeSoto, Jackson, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Red River or Webster.

Interested students must submit an application form signed by their faculty advisor along with a 250-word essay on “Why I Want to Pursue a Career in Journalism/Public Relations” by the Sept. 1 submission deadline. Applicants must be college juniors or seniors in the fall 2011 semester/quarter and have cumulative grade-point averages of at least 2.5 overall and 3.0 in their major.

The scholarships will be presented at the Shreveport Journalism Foundation’s Annual Meeting and Scholarship Presentation Dinner at Ralph & Kacoo’s Restaurant in Bossier City on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at 7 p.m.

Applications are available from John Lee, SJF vice president John Lee, at  318-688-1130 or Gregg Trusty, SJF president 318-393-0804. Completed applications with faculty advisor signatures, along with the required 250-word essays, must be received by Lee no later than 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1.
