I don’t think it’s a particularly bold statement to say that Justin Timberlake is one of the great all-around talents currently working today. Everyone knows his music and his hilarious appearances on Saturday Night Live, but with a filmography that includes everything from Inside Llewyn Davis to The Social Network, Timberlake has also proven himself several times over as an actor. Whatever Timberlake decides to do, odds are he will do it very, very well.

So it’s kind of a surprise that Netflix’s Justin Timberlake + the Tennessee Kids is Timberlake’s first concert film. It’s a perfect opportunity for Timberlake to bring together his talents as a performer, and actor, and a comedian. We don’t see much in this first teaser  —  just some footage of Timberlake getting ready and working with his band for the upcoming gig  —  but to be honest, the phrase ‘Justin Timberlake concert film’ was probably all you needed to make up your mind as to whether you would watch this or not. The teaser could have been just a photo of Timberlake and a release date and it would have accomplished just as much.

To shoot Justin Timberlake + the Tennessee Kids, Timberlake brought in director Jonathan Demme. Moviegoers might recognize Demme as the director of Academy Award-winning films such as The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, but Demme is particularly well-regarded when it comes to his work with the music industry. Demme has shot numerous music videos during his forty year career as a director; he also has several feature-length concert films to his name with bands like Talking Heads (Stop Making Sense) and Neil Young (Neil Young: Heart of Gold). If you want to do a concert film right, Demme is one of the first guys you should call.

Justin Timberlake + the Tennessee Kids will hit Netflix on October 12, 2016.
