Lolo Jones to Represent LSU at Sochi Olympics
It’s rare that a Louisiana athlete competes in the Winter Olympics. It’s also rare that an athlete competes in the Summer and Winter Olympic games. And that’s why Lolo Jones is such a big deal.
Lolo Jones is a resident of Baton Rouge and a graduate of LSU, where she was a track and field star. Jones competed in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics as a hurdler, but was never able to meet her medal expectations.
Following her 4th place finish in the hurdles at the 2012 Olympics, Jones started testing her athleticism in bob-sledding. She has had some success, medaling in the World Cup in 2012 and 2013 and winning a gold medal at the 2013 World Championships as part of Team USA.
Jones has the distinction of being the most followed USA Track and Field athlete on Twitter, but that won’t help her much in Sochi. Jones popularity is at the center of a mini-controversy within the bobsled and skeleton ranks. There are some that believe Jones got her slot on Team USA because of the exposure she brings rather than her merits as brakeman for the bobsled team. Either way, Lolo hopes to come back from Sochi with that coveted Olympic medal she’s been chasing since the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Jones is a native of Iowa, but has taken up residence in Baton Rouge since graduating from LSU.
