The LSU AgCenter is working to patent an eye drop it says not only would treat cataracts in the eye but also prevent them from forming. AgCenter Department of Biological and Agriculture Engineering Professor Crisitna Sabliov says they became interested in developing the drops because cataracts are the number one cause of sight loss in our country.

Sabliov says they have found a way to use lutein  keep the eye lens from becoming cloudy. "Lutein is a naturally occurring antioxidant that's known for its benefits to the eye.", she said. Lutein is already used in the treatment of cataracts, but only as an oral application, and Sabliov says developing the eye drop dramatically increases the efficiency of the lutein to repair and restore. "We are providing an alternative to cataract surger. In our case, no needles are required, just the daily application of the eye drop."

It's good to know that if our legislature finally agrees to allow medical marijuana to be used by people suffering in our state, the college agcenter chosen to grow it has minds like Ms. Sabliov and her team there waiting to make sure it is done well.
