No one ever said that Madonna was getting more mellow with age. Back in the early 2000s, she decided to get involved in US politics and almost killed her career.  (which she did for a short period of time).

Since she no longer lives in the USA, she has now turned her ire to the Soviet Union. Newly re-elected ,Vladmir Putin's home town is St. Petersburg and that is a haven for orthodox Christians.  Because of this, they also have laws that are different in St. Petersburg, that aren't the same in other parts of Russia. They have an "Anti-Gay Propaganda" laws.

The history on the law is that homosexuality was outlawed in the city and was criminalized until 1993, when it was finally legalized.

So when they use the term "Anti-Gay Propaganda", what does that mean?  On March 7th, the governor of St. Petersburg signed a law that bans lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered “propaganda” that could give minors “the false perception that traditional and nontraditional relationships are socially equal.” (BTW, that governor is a close, personal friend of Vladmir Putin.)

So it sounds a lot like Madonna is taking on Putin, himself. This could be quite tricky, as she is banking on her international stature to make a statement, but in recent weeks, Russia has seen certain punk music groups arrested and held indefinitely because of their outspoken opposition to Vladmir Putin's re-election.  How will this play out? We will find out in August.
