Nick Cannon Says ‘American Idol’ Can’t Afford Mariah Carey

Money talks, and while Mariah Carey hasn’t commented on the ‘American Idol‘ rumors, her doting hubby sure has. Nick Cannon flat out said that Mimi doesn’t come for cheap.TMZ reports that Cannon admitted his wifey’s expensive. “I don’t know if they can afford Mariah Carey,” Cannon said of ‘Idol’ producers. “That’s a lot of money. If they gave J. Lo $20 million, they might have to double that!”

Indeed, Carey’s been a pretty stern negotiator in the past. Her salary demands knocked her out of the running for the once-empty ‘X Factor‘ table, and since ‘Idol’ is downsizing next season, her price tag may prove too hefty for the struggling series. Carey is said to be in deep talks to replace the only original judge left, Randy Jackson, who will in turn take on a more mentoring role for the contestants.

When pressed for more details, Cannon grinned, “I don’t know, man! I’m not her manager, I’m her husband!” Cute! Cannon noted that Carey has an album coming out that she’ll need to promote and that “Everybody wants to talk to her!” Ironically, what may have been the most telling thing he said? “You never know!”
