The Louisiana Folklife Center at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches is accepting entries in the 2015 Louisiana High School Essay Contest.

This year's theme is 'Louisiana Time Machine!' Students get to explore the question: "If you could meet and talk with any Louisianan from the past, present or future, who would you choose and why?" Personal reflections and experiences are acceptable and essays can be in narrative form.

Essays need to be between 1,000 and 2,500 words long, should have titles and should be typed -- double-spaced, 12-point font, standard margins. The deadline for entries is May 15.

Essays can be sent as e-mail attachments to Dr. Shane Rasmussen at Rasmussen@nsula.edu, with the subject line "2015 Louisiana High School Essay Contest," or by mail to the Louisiana Folklife Center, NSU Box 3663, Natchitoches, LA 71497. Entries should include a separate cover page with the student's name, school affiliation, mailing address and title of the entry.

Prizes are $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. Winners will also receive a $200 per semester Northwestern State scholarship with a value up to $1,600 for four years. Prize-winners will be notified by July 15.

The three prize-winning entries will be published in the Louisiana Folklife Journal, edited by Rasmussen. Entries may be subject to minor revision before publication. The three winners will also be invited to present their essays at the 7th annual Louisiana Studies Conference at NSU, set for September 12.
