The big box retailers get their chance to shine on Black Friday, but the following day is Small Business Saturday, a day when locals can support our smaller, locally-owned shops.

"They're the businesses you remember," said Downtown Development Authority Director Liz Swaine. "When you travel somewhere, rarely do you come back with a story about a big box store or a chain. You come back with stories about these little, out-of-the-way, hole-in-the-wall places that had the greatest French toast you ever put in your mouth, or had that cute little thing that you had never seen or thought of anywhere else."

Downtown Shreveport will certainly be a-buzz that day, starting with a special breakfast from 9-11:30 a.m. at artspace.

"We want you carbo-loaded and energetic, so you can literally shop 'til you pop, or 'til you drop, whichever comes first," Swaine said.

Swaine said the best part about Small Business Saturday is that 68 cents of every dollar stays right here at home, so it's important for us not to forget these businesses, especially during the important holiday season.

After loading up on pancakes, you can check out the 14 businesses that make up the 2015 Holiday Pop UP, and participate in some fun family projects, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The Agora Borealis art marketplace at 421 Lake Street will host a giant trunk show, with more than a dozen local and regional artists and craftspeople. You can sample cider and coffee and purchase one-of-a-kind holiday gifts from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

In the Red River District, you can find holiday vendors and food trucks, a trunk show and product launch party at Hippie Baby. The event combines painting art with coffee, or wine, at downtown's newest business, Bon Temps Coffee Bar. That also runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Head to the downtown Shreveport website, or at any participating store, to get your #ShopLocalSB Passport for savings. You can get it stamped to win prizes. Participating business are Robinson Film Center, Epic Aquaria, Hippie Baby, Appli-Ks, Lena's Shoe Gallery, The Agora Borealis and artspace Pop UP shops.

Other businesses participating in Small Business Saturday events are Martha's Hallmark, On Time Fashion, Bon Temps Coffee Bar and Norsworthy Gallery.

The Red River District will feature live entertainment, vendors, food trucks and free activities for the kids -- including Geaux Bubbles, a bounce house and art projects. Street performers from Spinner Entertainment will also be bringing in their hula-hoopers, jugglers and stilt-walkers to entertain holiday shoppers.
