Silicon Valley will soon kick off its fifth and likely penultimate season, though the specter of comedian T.J. Miller’s exit still looms large. A new inside look at the series alleges that Miller was frequently intoxicated and absent from set, though plans were made to include him in Season 5.
Erlich Bachman is gone. So is T.J. Miller, for that matter, and the first Silicon Valley Season 5 trailer isn’t afraid to acknowledge it. See for yourself in the new 2018 promo, which also promises a late March premiere date.
Now that comedian T.J. Miller has been formally accused of sexual assault, additional women are stepping up to share their experiences. Both an adult film star, and transgender film critic reveal damning encounters with the Silicon Valley star, while Comedy Central cancels Miller’s alien puppet series, The Gorburger Show.
It would be fitting if there were no words to describe The Emoji Movie; if the ephemeral experience of consuming this unique entertainment could only be summarized in a small picture dashed off in a text message. But, no, there are plenty of words that can describe The Emoji Movie. Here are a few of them: Boring. Unfunny. Mercenary. Saccharine. Arduous. And, of course, crappy. If you prefer the poop emoji that works too.
Will The Emoji Movie be horrible? We just don’t know. The premise of “Toy Story, but with the little pictorial icons that live inside your smartphone” sure sounds like something that an executive with an analytics page for a heart would come up with, but it’s the critic’s responsibility to reserve judgement until the film can be seen in full. At least today brings us a bite-sized sample of The Emoji Movie with a new trailer that contains both a painfully out-of-fashion “Bye, Felicia” reference and a sincerely humorous joke about forgotten phone passwords. So it’s really anyone’s guess, at this point.
Behold, the gag reel. Long a staple of the home video market, the gag reel was perhaps at its most popular in the 1990s, when Jackie Chan released a string of movies that included painful outtakes during the closing credits. When studios realized that they could package an entire DVD release around the special feature menu, the gag reel became a mainstay of any comedy releases over the last 15 years. And because Deadpool was one big improvised joke with enough physical humor to make Mel Brooks blush, it was a natural fit for the film’s Blu-ray release as well.
HBO’s Veep has flown right past its title character’s need for an official office, not to mention its original showrunner, and the boys of Silicon Valley are equally far from finished. Both series will return for new seasons in 2018, HBO confirms.
There’s a pretty neat-sounding movie that’s been quietly in the works for a few months: Kristen Stewart signed on to Underwater back in February, which is described as an Armageddon-like action-thriller that centers around a submarine crew, an earthquake, and a fight for survival. If you’re a fan of famous French actors and/or Black Swan, get excited, because Vincent Cassel has officially joined the crew.
