Liam Neeson has a very particular set of skills. Skills he acquired over a very long career of making gritty action movies. Skills that make him a nightmare to people like Vera Farmiga, and also to people who try to get the 5:16 express to Ronkonkoma to leave three minutes early. He is ... The Commuter. Cue dramatic music!

In Liam Neeson’s latest action-filled extravaganza on a confining method of conveyance, he plays a guy trapped on a train and hounded by Farmiga’s woman of mystery. At some point he also jumps between trains, because what would a Liam Neeson movie be if he didn’t do some insane, physically impossible stunt?

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

In this action-packed thriller, Liam Neeson plays an insurance salesman, Michael, on his daily commute home, which quickly becomes anything but routine. After being contacted by a mysterious stranger, Michael is forced to uncover the identity of a hidden passenger on his train before the last stop. As he works against the clock to solve the puzzle, he realizes a deadly plan is unfolding and is unwittingly caught up in a criminal conspiracy. One that carries life and death stakes, for himself and his fellow passengers.

The Commuter is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who is responsible for several of Neeson’s better recent thrillers, including Non-Stop and Unknown, and the superior Blake Lively shark squabble The Shallows. In recent months, Neeson has announced he was retiring from action movies (because old), and then that he was un-retiring (because money). Hopefully these moves are no indication of The Commuter’s quality. It opens in theaters on January 12, 2018. Hopefully that is not an indication of its quality either.
