We can't say they didn't warn us. We've known for a couple of weeks that this would be the hottest week of the year so far, and it's certainly living up to its billing.
With temperatures expected to hit triple digits by this weekend, the National Weather Service is warning all residents of Northwest Louisiana, East Texas and Southern Arkansas of the dangers of this crippling heat and have issued a Heat Advisory effective from 12:00 pm until 7:00 pm today.
With a predicted high of 98 today and heat index values of up to 108 expected, they are warning all those who work outdoors and those who might not have access to air conditioning to take precautions to avoid serious heat related issues.
Those precautions include:
- Drink plenty of fluids
- If possible, stay in an air-conditioned room and out of the sun
- Check up on relatives and neighbors.
- Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
The National Weather Service goes on to remind residents to take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
