History will record the space shuttle's last launch as Atlantis got underway yesterday for the last flight of the 30-year space program.

The flight will last 12 days. Weather permitting, Atlantis will return to the  Kennedy Space Center, where it will end up on permanent display.

Up to 1 million people poured into the Cape Canaveral area to catch the historic launch, the last big rocket blastoff  expected at space center for perhaps a decade.
