Shreveport's medical marijuana dispensary could be open no later than the first of the year. Construction of the dispensary, located on Kings Highway near the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, has been delayed by recent rainfall. But pharmacist Doug Boudreaux expects the facility to open no latter than January.

As stated by state law, no plants will be grown at the dispensary. The facility will only be able to sell state produced and approved forms of marijuana extracts. No smokable forms of marijuana will be available to patients, only pills and oils.

Only patients who suffer from certain ailments will be able to get marijuana treatments. Some of the qualifying conditions currently covered by Louisiana law include cancer, epilepsy, HIV/AIDs, cachexia/wasting syndrome, Crohn's disease, Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and seizure disorders/spasticity.

Those who need marijuana treatments to function can pre-register with the state. The prescriptions will be pre-ordered before the clinic opens and will be stored in Baton Rouge until the opening date.
