U.S. News Rates Shreveport Regarding Best Places to Live
U.S. News has nice things to say about Shreveport in their survey listing the top 125 places to live in the United States. While they said complimentary things, Shreveport still only ranked 122nd out of 125.
While I wasn't able to find a publishing date for this survey, I found the results surprising. Most articles from other sites regarding Shreveport feel overwhelmingly negative. However, this one, makes sure to point out our rich cultural heritage, diversity, people, festivals, food, green spaces and business-friendly economic environment. .
Not surprisingly, Shreveport did not do well with regard to crime. The latest full year statistics referenced are from 2017, but in comparison to other cities with similar characterists, our crime rate, both violent and property crimes, are significantly higher than the national average. In fact, we only scored a 3.8 out of 10 according to their grading ruberic. Shreveport was also rating lower than the national average with regard to schools, rating a 4.6/10. Shreveport scored a 5/10 with regard to the local job market. Unemployment played a role in our low score.
There were also some statistics cited that I'm not sure I agreed with. U.S. News says that our average median salary is $39,400. Personally, I feel as if that number is a little high. Conversely, I think the figure they give for the average monthly rent in Shreveport is low at $789.
