Will You Download a Contact Tracing App?
You can put an app on your phone which can alert you if you have been in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19.
The state of Louisiana has released the app which can sense nearby phones and send you an alert if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive.
State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says you do have to opt in to voluntarily allowing the service to utilize your Bluetooth. But Kanter says you won't know who the infected person is and the state isn’t saving your information.
The app is called COVID defense and it records anonymous tokens from nearby phones and alerts you later if any of those tokens gets reported as COVID positive.
Kanter says similar services are already working quite well in other states.
COVID Defense is available on the Apple and Android app stores.
Doctors say this is another tool they can use to help stop the spread of the virus. The app is completely voluntary, but the more people who use it, the more effective it will be.
