Louisiana Makes Top 10 ‘Most Dangerous States in America’ List
While Louisiana wasn’t number one on the “Most Dangerous States in America” list, it did make the top 10. According to the latest data from the FBI, Louisiana is the no. 7 state where a violent crime is most likely to occur.
247wallst.com broke down the numbers by state. The analysis shows the murder rate here in the Bayou State is 10.8 per 100,000 — the worst in the country. Mississippi had the second-highest murder rate, at 7.4 per 100,000. Louisiana also has among the highest rates of violent crime and property crime, and the second-highest rate of larceny-theft in the nation.
The website says the high crime rates are a reflection of our state’s high poverty rate, which is 19.9 percent, making it the third-poorest state. Of the 495 murders in Louisiana in 2012, 193 happened in the city of New Orleans alone, with gun violence being most prevalent in the city.
