Why Is This Mother Furious Her Son Made the Honor Roll?

Beth Tillack
WFTS

Every parent beams when his or her child makes the honor roll. Well, almost every parent.

A Pasco County, Florida woman is up in arms after her son made the honor roll, despite the fact he got a ‘C’ and a ‘D.’

Beth Tillack says rewarding her son is wrong:

The bottom line is there is nothing honorable about making a D. I was not happy, because how can I get my child to study for a test when he thinks he’s done enough.”

Tillack’s son wound up on the honor roll because it’s based on total points, meaning As can offset poor grades. The school’s principal agrees that’s a system that should be studied, while Tillack argues, “There definitely should be a cutoff.” The school system also says it’s considering altering the requirement to be an honor student.

Tillack is also none too pleased the report card she received said, “Good job,” since some of the grades were poor. She got a second copy that encouraged her son to “work on civics.” The principal also said it’s a reminder that teachers need to be more careful when looking over report cards.
