Louisiana Film Prize Festival is October 9 through 12. Here's a closer look at one of the Top 20 films, "Addam."
"Addam" is a comedy and drama directed by Alex Nystrom. We asked Alex a few questions about his short film.
What is your film about?
Addam is about an A.D.D. student named Adam who must overcome the fantastical distractions he creates during his final exam.
What kind of message are you trying to get across in your film?
The message I want to portray is that attention deficit disorder should be celebrated. It is commonly misunderstood - people often down take it seriously or even believe that it is an actual disorder. The fact is that everyone's brain works in its own way, and that's what allows for our individuality. I hope people relate to this film because everyone gets distracted, but like everything else, some are more affected than others.
Where in Northwest Louisiana did you film?
We filmed at Centenary College in Shreveport. It is a beautiful university, and I wish the story allowed for more of the campus to be featured in it.
What were your impressions about Northwest Louisiana, specifically the Shreveport-Bossier area?
Each time I revisit the Shreveport-Bossier area, I find new gems around the city. I think that over time, people will realize what this area has to offer and people will flock here. The Louisiana Film Prize is definitely helping in this movement.
Would you film in this area again?
This area has a variety of different locations that are ideal for filming. I wouldn't be surprised if I film here again. Louisiana continues to flourish with more filmmakers each year, myself included!
$50,000 is on the line! What do you plan on doing with the money if you win?
If I won the $50,000, I would immediately pay the cast and crew for all of their hard work. This project came together with a very small budget, and everyone who lent their creative talents would be paid. In addition, this would be a monumental success in establishing myself as a director. I would invest the rest of the money in creating a feature film of my own.
Why should someone vote for your film?
My film should be considered because it is a personal story that I think connects with the whole audience. It is unique, memorable, and will keep you on your toes throughout. As I said before, it is a celebration of A.D.D., and each vote would spread awareness for understanding this disorder in a positive way.
Additional thoughts:
I am very excited to be a part of the Louisiana Film Prize this year and I think no matter what happens it will be a great experience. I look forward to see all of the films and meeting fellow filmmakers who share the same dreams as I do, and perhaps meet future collaborators! Best of luck to everyone, and even though this is a competition, we can't forget to celebrate the accomplishments we've already made. It is a festival after all!
