If you are trying to eat healthy, you know that is really tough in Louisiana. We are surrounded by some of the best restaurants in the world. The food in the bayou state is second to none. But we all know many of those wonderful dishes we love so much like gumbo, crawfish etouffee and jambalaya are just not on the list of healthy foods.

Our list from Louisiana could go on and on. We love gravy. We love butter. We love rich food. But this great food does contribute to health issues. Shreveport is considered one of the fattest cities in the United States.

Most of us could stand to lose a few pounds. The Mayo Clinic says you can make permanent adjustments to your diet with just a few changes:

1. Sit at the table without distractions — no TV, magazine or cellphone.

2. Be aware of the bright colors and fresh smells of the food on your plate.

3. Slowly savor your food by noticing the aromas, textures and tastes of every bite.

4. Put down your fork periodically.

5. Stop eating when you feel satisfied, but before you feel full.

The report says most folks in the U.S. eat too much sodium and too many calories from saturated fat and added sugars. That's an even bigger problem in Louisiana. Many of our dishes are salty and have lots of saturated fats.
