Louisiana State University might not have had such a stellar football season this year, but their Pennington Biomedical Research Center has something worth crowing about. Once again, the DASH Diet, pioneered at the center, is ranked the best overall diet for healthy eating according to U.S. News and World Report.

If your New Year's resolution was to drop a few pounds, this might be some of the best news you'll read all day!  Not only is the DASH diet easy to commit to, it's just as easy to follow and it doesn't require those expensive pre-packaged meals or spending hours in the gym. It will also help your overall health!

In a report from the Louisiana Radio Network, we hear from Dr. Catherine Champagne, Director of Dietary Assessment, that DASH has been around since the 1990's, and the reason it's made it so long is because of its ease.

“DASH and the Mediterranean diet are diets that you can subscribe to for a lifestyle, for a long time, in other words making them a lifestyle,” said Champagne.

Dr. Champagne explains that DASH mainly consists of nutrient rich, low calorie health foods, designed to lower blood pressure and address hypertension, adding, “We know that it emphasizes foods that we have always been told to eat like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and low fat dairy.”

For those considering this life altering DASH diet might wonder what a typical meal consists of and it's relatively simple. Dinner would be mostly vegetables and fruits, with some complex carbs like brown rice and a small serving of lean protein like fish or chicken.

There are two major changes to a normal diet that the DASH diet zeroes in on and that is considerable less salt and red meat consumption
