Save some money on back to school shopping in Louisiana this weekend because it's tax free weekend.

The holiday began at 12:01 a.m. today and ends at 11:59 p.m. Saturday.  Only the 4 percent state sales tax is exempt on purchases, with some items excepted.

All other sales taxes, such as municipal and parish sales taxes, still apply.

The tax-free weekend is for all shoppers,  not just those buying school supplies, on purchases up to $2,500 except on items such as food, drinks, rent and vehicles.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is encouraging sports enthusiasts to get a head start shopping.

"Not only are items bought this weekend included but also items put on layaway during the holiday are eligible for the exemption. Items that are already in layaway can also be purchased this weekend and receive the tax credit," LDWF said in a press release.
